Hey guys, what's your take on plate armor? I'd personally like to wear some, but the whole "lol hay stay period gaiz" makes me a little reluctant to invest in plate. With the shuffling of rules for leather, and with my reluctance to wear chain, plate just seems obvious to me.

Re: Plate armor?
plate is legal, but it'd be heavy to wear, i wouldn't wear it because i'm a fast-ish person but go ahead if you want to

Re: Plate armor?
as Lance said, plate is perfectly legal, plus it's very period. Knights and the royalties guard usually wore plate because, if the knights or the guard were killed, the royalty was screwed.
Plate is EXTREMELY heavy. Try getting chainmail running around for a couple miles, then double that. The average plate armour weighs about 40 lbs. Plate LEGS however, are actually much lighter then expected, they just restrict your movement a lot.
Sorry if I said too much, I like armour

Re: Plate armor?
I'm thinking more along the lines of using metal where armor is typically worn, like bracers, greaves, and if the user can handle it, something strapped to the torso. I hadn't seen many people that wear a full suit of anything at Ragnarok or Gates II; in fact, most of what I saw was piecemeal.
I think collectively, my unit has two leather pauldrons, five leather bracers, a leather gorget, two leather greaves, two leather half-gauntlets, two chain greaves, a chain coif, a chain hauberk, and a steel helm. This stuff is spread between about five guys. At the most, one guy has a whole arm, his head, and his torso covered.
My point is, though, is that plate could be as easy, though a bit heavier, to wear as a replacement for these, if properly articulated and crafted. But I might just be an armor-idiot.
Also, I wish it were period for me. D: Us Wolves are vikings, so even the pauldrons aren't exactly period, according to Gunnar. Personally, since I'm supposed to be a berserk, I shouldn't even be wearing a tunic and proper pants, let alone my gauntlets and bracer.
Sorry if I'm missing something crazy here in regards to encumbrance. I might not be thinking very realistically. Maybe a few too many shields or reds to the face.

this is dagorhir, nothing is realistic, but what you wear is up to you, i don't think that if it doesn't match you char should matter for periodness, just if it's overall in the period times

Re: Plate armor?
i beg to differ, i think that ones dress should match ones persona. Guntar is a cool guy and knows what hes talking about, once you got use to wearing the platemail it wont be an emcumberance, unless you go to colorado, then it might XD and Full plate is certainly spiffy, though i prefer chainmail with leather limbs my self, but i may make a helm sometime...

Re: Plate armor?
If I were to wear any armor, I would probably wear the light, flexible hardened leather just because of the lack of movement restrictions, and in Dagorhir it counts the same as plate. (Leather does have restrictions, but not nearly as bad as plate. Best of luck.
